Are Superheroes Our Modern Mythology?

I just had a thought recently. Maybe I was late to realize it, but as I’ve been reading Greek and Norse myths to my kid, I noticed how much they have in common with modern superheroes. The powers of Zeus or Ares feel hidden inside characters like Batman, The Flash, and Superman. They don’t have the exact same abilities, but they all possess supernatural powers.

So, are superheroes our modern mythology?

Of course, ancient mythology was a religion, and people actually believed in those gods to explain natural disasters as the anger of the deities. Today, we understand the science behind those disasters, so instead, we create superheroes to protect us from criminals—not to punish us for our mistakes.

But my main point is that we still need stories to help us escape our everyday routines. I’ve watched live-action Batman and Spider-Man movies many times, and I always enjoy them. Billions of dollars are spent making these films, and there is always a new story to tell. Audiences never get bored, and with the right director and budget, success is almost guaranteed..
