The Illusion of "Logging Off"
Before, we actually had a sense of relief. When you finally shut the fucking PC down, you could stop thinking about your daily tasks. You did your 8 to 9 hours at work, and then? Freedom. The only things waiting for you were phone calls or MSN messages from close family and friends.
Now, there is no relief.
We shut the PC, but we are still tethered. Our smartphones carry our entire digital work environment right in our pockets—Teams, Slack, emails, you name it. Turning off the computer doesn't bring relaxation anymore because we are still just one notification away from a spreadsheet.
When I actually reply after hours, my boss will say, "Oh, you don't need to answer during non-working hours." Okay, sure, I appreciate the sentiment. But he is still sending the stuff.
